Description
Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen
Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle comes vividly to life in Stefan Herheim’s visionary staging, conducted by Sir Donald Runnicles.
Composed over more than twenty-five years, Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) stands as one of the most ambitious artistic achievements in the history of music. Inspired by Germanic and Norse mythology, Wagner’s epic cycle explores the intertwined forces of love, power and the corrupting lure of absolute dominion through the fate of a magical ring that grants limitless power to its possessor.
Bringing together Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, this Deutsche Oper Berlin production captures the full dramatic sweep of Wagner’s masterpiece. Stefan Herheim offers a bold and imaginative new vision of the cycle, while Sir Donald Runnicles leads an outstanding international cast in a compelling interpretation of this monumental work.
DAS RHEINGOLD
The prologue to the Ring, Das Rheingold recounts the theft of the Rhinegold and the forging of the cursed ring by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich. When Wotan seizes the ring to pay for the construction of Valhalla, Alberich’s curse sets in motion the chain of events that will ultimately bring about the downfall of the gods.
DIE WALKÜRE
The second instalment of the cycle, Die Walküre introduces many of the Ring‘s central characters. The forbidden love of Siegmund and Sieglinde, Brünnhilde’s defiance of Wotan’s will, and iconic scenes such as the Ride of the Valkyries and Wotan’s Farewell make this one of Wagner’s greatest achievements, where poetry and music reach an extraordinary unity.
SIEGFRIED
Raised by the treacherous Mime, the young Siegfried discovers his true origins before facing dragons, betrayal and magic in his quest for the ring. Fearless and unstoppable, he ultimately passes through the circle of fire to awaken the sleeping Brünnhilde in one of the most radiant and exhilarating conclusions Wagner ever composed.
GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG
The final instalment of the Ring, Götterdämmerung brings Wagner’s epic cycle to its cataclysmic conclusion. Betrayal, murder and sacrifice converge as the old world collapses. When the ring is finally returned to the Rhinemaidens, the age of the gods comes to an end, leaving, amid destruction, the promise of renewal.
