Monteverdi : L’Orfeo

When music defies death: under the masterful direction of Jordi Savall, Marc Mauillon delivers a poignant Orpheus in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo: a dazzling lyrical revival at the Opéra Comique.

Premiered in 1607 at the court of the Gonzagas in Mantua, L’Orfeo is often regarded as the first great opera in history. Monteverdi revolutionized lyrical art, giving music an unprecedented dramatic force to express love, sorrow, and hope. Inspired by the myth of Orpheus, the story follows the poet-musician’s descent into the Underworld, driven by the desperate hope of bringing Eurydice back to life. But fate strikes mercilessly, and his journey becomes a poignant meditation on destiny and the power of art.

In this Opéra Comique production, Jordi Savall, an undisputed master of early music, brings exceptional intensity and eloquence to Monteverdi’s score. Leading La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations, he unveils the full richness of the composer’s sound world, balancing the expressive recitar cantando with moments of dazzling instrumental brilliance.

Pauline Bayle’s minimalist staging focuses on the essence of the drama: a man alone before the gods, armed only with his song. Marc Mauillon lends his voice and presence to Orpheus, embodying a hero torn between doubt and passion. At his side, Luciana Mancini brings a luminous Eurydice to life, Sara Mingardo delivers a heartbreaking Messaggiera, while Furio Zanasi and Salvo Vitale command the stage as figures of the Underworld.

A landmark masterpiece reimagined with brilliance, where the magic of the Baroque resonates with undiminished power.

Press review

«…L’Orfeo thrives when given sufficient room to breathe, and its intellectual agenda benefits from a degree of sympathetic stylization. French director Pauline Bayle gives it just that in this spare yet visually striking 2021 coproduction mounted in the intimate surroundings of Paris’s Opéra Comique.

Musically, we are in the safest hands. Jordi Savall, conducting his Concert des Nations, leads a lean, immaculately executed reading that is cohesive, detailed and imaginative, eschewing extreme tempos as part of a deeper, more richly reflective interpretation. His vocal ensemble, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, forms the chorus and boasts some splendid individual voices as solo nymphs, shepherds and underworld spirits.

[Marc Mauillon’s] plangent tone and thoughtful way with the text is perfectly suited to the role, and his Byzantine decoration of the vocal line is mesmerizing. …He’s well matched by velvet-toned soprano Luciana Mancini, who captures the innocent charm of Euridice. She also displays commanding gravitas as La Musica, who oversees the opera from start to finish. » – OPERA NEWS

« The voices of the singers, solo and choral, are uniformly beautiful, and the period instruments of Le Concert des Nations are excellent. » – FANFARE

« Top honors go to Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland, whose melting tones are heard in the roles of Proserpina and Speranza. Contralto Sara Mingardo is a rich-voiced Messenger, and Luciana Mancini is expressive and compelling of voice and appearance as Euridice and La Musica. » – AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE
