About

Strauss : Arabella

Behind the Viennese splendour of Arabella, Strauss and Hofmannsthal examine the fragilities of the couple and the roles imposed on both women and men.

Created in 1933, Arabella was long regarded as an elegant Viennese comedy, shaped by Richard Strauss’s refined orchestral writing. Yet beneath the waltzes, games of seduction and bourgeois appearances lies a work marked by the tensions between social convention and individual desire.

In this production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Tobias Kratzer highlights the clash between two visions of the world: traditional gender roles on the one hand, and more fluid, evolving identities on the other, embodied in particular by Zdenka. From 19th-century Vienna to the present day, the staging traces with subtlety the ambiguities of desire, gender and emotional power.

Led by Sir Donald Runnicles at the helm of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, this contemporary reading features Sara Jakubiak in the title role, alongside Elena Tsallagova, Russell Braun, Robert Watson, Albert Pesendorfer and Doris Soffel.
