Wagner : Die Walküre
A Die Walküre to be remembered: Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Aix-en-Provence Festival !
After the success of Das Rheingold, Stéphane Braunschweig’s staging of the second part of the tetralogy Die Walküre was a triumph in Aix’s brand new Grand Théâtre de Provence.
With a remarkable international cast – Sir Willard White, Robert Gambill, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Eva Johansson and Mikhail Petrenko – accompanied by the Berliner Philharmoniker, Simon Rattle brought almost unparalleled breadth to the work.
In opting for a movingly human approach to the drama unfolding on stage, director Stéphane Braunschweig obtained superb performances from an extraordinary group of singers.
A momentous double DVD, also available in Blu-ray.

“The dazzling Berliner Philharmoniker”
“Willard White brings enormous dramatic intensity to Wotan’s confession to Brunnhilde.” – Le Figaro
“A Sieglinde is born.”
“Eva–Maria Westbroek in Olympian form: nobly powerful singing, with the high register radiant and supple, the low register splendid and the characterisation perfect. This Sieglinde was cheered like a rock star . . . . with whom Aix 2007 had fallen madly in love.” – Libération
“An absolute godsend of an orchestra”
“The Berliner Philharmoniker is an absolute godsend: if you haven’t heard them you don’t know what an orchestra is. The brass section plays with utter precision of attack and astonishing timing. The strings and woodwinds are breathtaking.” – Le Monde
