About

Chabrier : L’Étoile

Step into the enchanting world of Chabrier’s L’Étoile: a sparkling musical fantasy where witty humor meets orchestral virtuosity. An irresistible comedy that has lit up the Parisian stage for over a century.

Created in 1877, L’Étoile marks a turning point in the history of French opéra comique. Admired by his contemporary Henri Duparc, Chabrier’s work was hailed as a French response to the grand lyrical traditions of Germany, blending musical depth with theatrical lightness. Set in an imaginary kingdom where absurdity reigns supreme, the whimsical fate of Lazuli, a young peddler in love, intertwines with the madcap intrigues of King Ouf I. While the story may appear frivolous, the sophistication of the orchestration and the sparkling wit that runs through the score make L’Étoile a unique and visionary masterpiece.

Under the inspired baton of Patrick Fournillier, the Residentie Orkest The Hague and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera bring Chabrier’s music to life with vitality and finesse. Laurent Pelly’s staging, enhanced by Chantal Thomas’s imaginative sets, immerses the audience in a visual universe as playful as it is poetic, with every detail brimming with fantasy.

With an exceptional cast led by Stéphanie d’Oustrac as Lazuli, Christophe Mortagne as King Ouf I, and Hélène Guilmette as Princess Laoula, this production pays tribute to Chabrier’s inimitable spirit, celebrating the intelligence and joie de vivre that infuse every note of his score.

Press review

« A dreamcast for a show on which blows a gentle wind of madness à la Prévert: L’Etoile, the opera buffa of Chabrier, finally finds its video version. » – DIAPASON

« ‘Whimsical charm with an outrageous behavior’. L’Etoileis sure to please… this is an apex moment in operatic theater. Laurent Pelly is, again, to be lauded to the fullest by reaching for and achieving that one star. » – CONCERTONET.COM

« The all-French cast is ideal, led by the rich-toned mezzo Stéphanie d’Oustrac, who chews up the text and has a lot of fun as a roguish, convincingly boyish Lazuli. Equally fine is Hélène Guilmette, as Princess Laoula, her voice light as a soufflé, her diction clear as a bell. » – OPERA NEWS

« I am sure that newcomers should sample this splendid Naxos release to see and hear for themselves why Ravel and co. were making such a fuss. » – MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

« Stéphanie d’Oustrac makes a terrific Lazuli, impulsive and witty, wonderfully secure throughout the role’s wide vocal range. Hélène Guilmette sounds ravishing in Laoula’s ‘Couplets de la rose’, and her silvery soprano blends beautifully with d’Oustrac in their scenes together. Mortagne, an actor at the Comédie-Française as well as a singer, is hugely impressive as Ouf, while Julie Boulianne’s elegant Aloès coolly plays Elliot Madore’s prissy Hérisson and François Piolino’s Tapioca off against each other: Piolino is an appealing tenor and you rather wish Chabrier had given him more to do. In the pit, meanwhile, Fournillier has all the grace and lightness of touch… It’s well worth hearing… » – GRAMOPHONE
