Between political conflict and intimate drama, Maria Stuarda brings one of history’s most legendary rivalries to life in one of Donizetti’s greatest bel canto masterpieces.

Inspired by the historic rivalry between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Mary, Queen of Scots, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda portrays the confrontation between two remarkable women locked in a struggle that is at once political, religious and deeply personal. Long hampered by censorship because of its controversial subject matter and its portrayal of the English monarchy, the opera has since come to be recognised as one of the crowning achievements of tragic bel canto.

Here, Donizetti’s music combines extraordinary vocal virtuosity with gripping dramatic intensity. The great confrontations between the two queens form the emotional core of the opera, leading to one of the most moving final scenes in the Italian Romantic repertoire.

Filmed at the Teatro Real, David McVicar‘s acclaimed production unfolds in a visually striking world of monumental sets and sumptuous period costumes, vividly evoking both the splendour of the Elizabethan court and the brutality of political power.

Under the baton of José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, Lisette Oropesa and Aigul Akhmetshina deliver compelling portrayals of the two rival queens, bringing the opera’s human and tragic dimensions fully to life in a performance that reveals the expressive richness of Donizetti’s score.
