About

Haendel : Giulio Cesare in Egitto

Power, desire, manipulation: in Giulio Cesare, Handel turns history into a fascinating game of conquest.

Set during the Roman Civil War, the opera follows the uneasy alliance between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, who is willing to do anything to secure the throne of Egypt. Political intrigue, family rivalries and passionate entanglements drive this great Baroque drama, where dazzling vocal virtuosity sits alongside moments of striking intimacy.

In this critically acclaimed production, Calixto Bieito relocates the action to a contemporary universe of oligarchs and power players, unfolding within a “digital dream” set against a desert paradise. Emmanuelle Haïm leads Le Concert d’Astrée with incisive energy, revealing the full theatrical richness and sensuality of Handel’s score.

Christophe Dumaux is a magnetic Giulio Cesare, opposite the radiant Cleopatra of Julie Fuchs, alongside Cecilia Molinari, Teresa Iervolino, Cameron Shahbazi and Frederik Bergman.
