About

Adam : Le Postillon de Lonjumeau

Between vocal panache and haute couture madness: Michael Spyres blazes as the king of high Cs in Le Postillon de Lonjumeau, dazzling in Christian Lacroix’s sparkling costumes, for a firework display as chic as it is unrestrained at the Opéra Comique!

When opéra-comique reaches dazzling heights of virtuosity and wit: Adolphe Adam’s Le Postillon de Lonjumeau, a joyful 1836 masterpiece, brilliantly blends Rococo glamour with amorous misunderstandings. Between the irresistible flair of the tenor Chapelou, a postilion with a golden voice, and the tender cunning of Madeleine, his abandoned wife turned marquise by way of romantic revenge, audiences are swept away by a sparkling score full of charm.

In this sumptuous Opéra Comique production, Michael Spyres triumphs in a signature role, while Florie Valiquette shines with grace and vivacity. Michel Fau directs with panache and humor, supported by the spectacular costumes of the legendary Christian Lacroix, which lend this lyrical gem the air of a baroque fairytale.

Conducted with brilliance by Sébastien Rouland at the helm of the Orchestre and Chorus of the Opéra de Rouen Normandie, Le Postillon de Lonjumeau is pure musical and theatrical jubilation — a feast of vocal fireworks, social comedy, and French elegance.

Press review

« An enthralling experience.» – OPERA

« Soprano Florie Valiquette also warms up slowly, adding subtle ornamentation in act II, where she is superb… This is a successful, amusing production… » – FANFARE

« Michael Spyres is spectacular as Chapelou and his alter ego Saint-Phar. The American tenor is a specialist in this type of music, speaking French as easily as any of the native speakers on stage and exuding a charm that the role must have in order for the audience to be on his side. » – AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE

« Jubilant! No matter how hard we look for another word to define these two good hours of musical pleasure, it’s always the same one that we come back to. Jubilant, yes, really! In our society in the midst of health, economic and cultural difficulties, here’s an irresistible way to put aside all gloomy ideas and plunge into visual and vocal joy. » – CRESCENDO

« Adam’s neat, charming writing is impeccable and one recognises the sinuous melodic lines of the composer of Giselle. This witty and visually-ingenious 2019 production by Michel Fau (costumes by Christian Lacroix, no less) was the first at its point of origin in 115 years. Dialogue is vital and convincing. Michael Spyres possesses exactly the supple, agile voice required for the title role, revelling in the role’s delicious top notes. As his wife Madeleine, Florie Valiquette offers character in abundance and a technical fluency equivalent to her tenor partner. » – BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE
